Earning the CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician Credential

The CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® (CDET) program is a comprehensive, written, examination that is administered, and graded by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. The examination evaluates a Dryer Exhaust Technician's understanding of the basic information technicians must master to become competent dryer exhaust safety and fire prevention specialists. Technicians desiring to be CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® test by paying the applicable certification examination fee to the CSIA and are tested on building codes, NFPA 211, NFPA 54 standards, and all facets of cleaning and examining residential and commercial dryer exhaust systems.

provides exam candidates with a convenient and affordable guided learning experience. Daily reading assignments from CSIA’s Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician study manual coincide with four online lessons and interactive quizzes designed to help you pass the CDET exam.

About the CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician Exam
The CDET examination is composed of 50 multiple-choice questions. CSIA allows a maximum of 30 minutes for candidates to complete the test. The examination is closed book- the use of notes or reference material, including the CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® Manual is forbidden during the examination. To become certified, applicants must attain a score of 80 percent or higher on the examination.  The exam is now available online and ready to be administered by proctors approved by CSIA.  Please contact CSIA at (317) 837-5362 or certification@csia.org to locate a proctor

To become certified, applicants must attain a score of 80 percent or higher on the examination. Applicants will receive pass/fail notification within 2-4 weeks of the test date. Candidates who score below 80 percent may re-take the examination at a lesser fee, if the re-test is taken within six months. After six months, the full examination fee will be charged.
